The recent hijacking of the Jaffer Express train by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has once again brought international focus on the Balochistan conflict. The action is not just an act of terrorism but also a reflection of the long-standing demand for Baloch independence and their long-standing struggle.
The dispute between Balochistan and Pakistan began during the country's inception in 1947. Baloch leaders claim that their province was forcibly joined to Pakistan against their wishes, even though they desired independence. Baloch nationalists have initiated numerous uprisings throughout the years, which were brutally put down by the Pakistan government.
Balochistan is Pakistan's biggest province, which has natural resources including gas, minerals, and other valuable resources. Although they account for much in the nation's economy, native Baloch nationals do not enjoy much from such resources. People have been faulting the government for neglecting their progress and overstepping on their constitutional rights.
The BLA has emerged as a strong faction within the Baloch freedom movement, rebelling with an armed insurgency against the Pakistani state and the military. Their goal is to gain freedom for Balochistan and ensure that the riches of the land end up in its own people.
The Pakistani regime and military have been consistently blamed for human rights atrocities in Balochistan. Accounts have it that many hundreds of Baloch activists, intellectuals, and journalists have gone missing mysteriously, with the majority of them found dead later. This crackdown strategy has been used to spur more militancy among Baloch youth. As a response to Pakistan's heavy military approach, there have been various separatist groups in recent years, and their resistance to the Pakistani military is growing in the form of political violence.
The latest attack on the Jaffer Express serves as a sad reminder of the Balochistan turmoil, highlighting the long-standing grievances of its people. With international attention building, the question is—will Pakistan acknowledge these issues of long standing or will they still continue to silence voices calling for freedom?
